The East Expansion Project comprises a landside terminal extension with domestic arrivals hall, airline offices, retail units, and main terminal concourse at ground level and new security hall and remote screening at first floor level. This project was part of the Security Expansion Programme and involved relocating the central search area to a new location which, in turn, enabled the creation of a walk-through WDF retail unit providing incremental revenue. This included phased design and construction solutions working within a live airport environment.
The project objectives were to deliver an environment for an efficient security operation that maximises throughputs whilst providing free-flowing passenger circulation, to create a facility capable of meeting current and future passenger growth forecasts, to deliver high levels of customer satisfaction and compliance.
H&K were appointed under the EAL Consultants Framework to provide M&E Consultancy Services including provision of full M&E services design drawings and specifications aligned with the procurement method employed and separate project stages identified. We worked with the rest of the design team and client group to carefully design the services solutions through close and collaborative working relationships with the Edinburgh Airport Asset Team, and supported the client through construction, commissioning, handover and operation phases.
This was a complex project successfully delivered amongst the workings of a live airport environment. The overall value of the works was circa £25M, of which the M&E services value was around £7M.
This comprised Stage 1 (Infrastructure Diversions and Enabling Work and New Build Shell & Core), Stage 2 (Search Area Fit Out), Stage 3 (New World Duty Free Retail Area) and Stage 4 (Departures Area Retail Reconfiguration). The project was split into two components. The enabling and new extension works was procured using a two stage Develop & Construct Contract with the final fit out procured as a Single Stage Traditional contract.
We also liaised with our fellow design team professionals to ensure all services interface issues were resolved, and design disciplines were co-ordinated for roof plant enclosures, pre-packaged plantrooms, services risers, and high level ductwork and containment routing as co-ordinated with structural beam solutions.
