Working as part of the Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures team, Hulley & Kirkwood assisted the planning and environmental / energy statement process providing valuable information upon ventilation design, energy use and building regulation compliance to ensure a cost effective design was accepted.
The detail design was carried out by Hulley & Kirkwood utilising 3-D Revit BIM software, thereby ensuring that a fully coordinated services infrastructure was produced, including MEP detail design, sections and dimensioned builder's work drawings.
The project comprised multiple accommodation blocks with a mixture of studio apartments and cluster flats.
There was also the provision of common space for laundry, a screening room and office accommodation.
A new energy centre remote to the main building provides domestic services and electrical distribution systems via a gas fired district heating & CHP combined heat and power plant.
Due to the high thermal efficiency and low air leakage rate designed into the building, the use of electric heating could be used, subsidised by the combined heat and power plant and roof mounted photovoltaic panels.
The client, Coventry University, required an EPC rating of “A” which was achieved by the implementation of the gas fired CHP plant as the prime energy source providing all of the hot water provision and also the power source for the all-electric heating system.
